Beyond the Gate, a digital work by Elin Morrow, built from photographs and sketches made at Rhoscolyn

Beyond the Gate

At the far end of the beach at Rhoscolyn there is a little gate. Beyond it, the path disappears into the headland and joins the coastal path. In summer, the hedgerows around it are tangled with honeysuckle and, later in the year, bright red rose hips. As children, rose hips had another purpose entirely. We would split them open and sneak the tiny hairy seeds down the back of a friend’s T-shirt, then wait for the inevitable itching to begin. Nature’s own itching powder, and absolutely hilarious when you were eight. Now, looking through that little gate, those hedgerows feel different. The honeysuckle, rose hips and long grasses frame a glimpse of Rhoscolyn beyond, with white cottages in the distance and the coastal path waiting somewhere on the other side.
