Tu Hwnt i’r Twyni
Beyond the Dunes
There is a moment at Newborough when you leave the shelter of the trees and find your way through the dunes, when the whole landscape suddenly opens before you. First the sand. Then the sea. And beyond it, Eryri. The mountains seem almost impossibly close, dark against the water, while the huge Anglesey sky shifts above them. Light catches the tops of the grasses and spills through the clouds, turning an ordinary walk to the beach into something altogether more magical. Perhaps that is the spell of Newborough. You never quite arrive at the sea in one go. It reveals itself slowly, glimpsed between trees and over dunes, until suddenly there it is, with the mountains waiting on the other side.
